Orthodontic treatment options

Treatment options and types of braces

Ready to start your journey to a beautiful new smile? Then you’re in the right place, because at Ilam Orthodontics we have a range of treatment options available and our specialist orthodontists can recommend the right one for you.

Invisalign treatment

Invisalign® is the invisible orthodontic system to straighten teeth using a series of custom-made, clear aligners. Using the latest advances in 3D computer technology Invisalign translates your orthodontist’s instructions into a series of aligners. You wear each set of aligners, moving your teeth gradually week by week, until the desired result is achieved.

Fixed Braces

In our practice, clear porcelain brackets are used routinely on the upper front teeth to obtain the best aesthetic appearance for our patients. There is no additional charge for using these more expensive brackets. Patients often choose different coloured elastic “O” rings at each adjustment visit for fun.

Suresmile 3D scanning technology is used for advanced planning and comfortable brace placement.

Functional appliances

Functional appliances stretch the jaw muscles and hold the lower jaw in a forward postured position. Over a short period of time these forces move the teeth very quickly and effectively. Functional appliances are often used in younger patients with large overjets and they help to reduce the prominence of the upper front teeth.

Traditionally these have been removable plates called Bionators and Twin Blocks. Now Invisalign can be used to replicate the mechanism action of functional appliances.

Removable Appliances

These appliances are easy to remove and keep clean. Orthodontic problems such as crossbites, finger or thumbsucking habits and space issues can be corrected using these appliances. Using a removable appliance may eliminate the need for more complex orthodontic treatment at a later date.

Retainers

Congratulations on your new smile! Finally you are free! Well not quite… there are still retainers to wear and they are extremely important! Your teeth have memory; they will move with age and do their best to return to where they were before you had braces.

Your retainers are designed just for you to keep those unruly teeth in line. Initially, retainers must be worn 24 hours a day lessening over time to being worn only at night, like pyjamas for your teeth. You need to wear your retainers for as long as you want to keep the teeth straight because there is a tendency for some teeth to move all the way through our lives.

Remember to wear your retainers and hold that smile.
