Meet our team

At Ilam Orthodontics, you can be sure of many things: exceptional treatment, the latest in technology and educational resources, and the skills and knowledge of our three specialist orthodontists, Dr Peter Fowler, Dr Marguerite Crooks and Dr John Perry. Our team of orthodontic auxiliaries and dental assistants work closely with our specialist orthodontists to deliver our patients the highest level of orthodontic care. Specialist Orthodontist

Peter graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and undertook specialist orthodontic training in the UK which included a Master's Degree in Orthodontics from the University of London, a Diploma of Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and a Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons, England.

He also completed a Fellowship in the specialist field of Orthodontics from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. More recently he is undertaking a part-time PhD from the Paediatric Department at the University of Auckland's Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

Peter is a Fellow of the New Zealand Dental Association, a fellow of the International College of Dentists and an Honorary Member of the Taiwanese Orthodontic Association. He is also a Final Fellowship examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Otago. Discipline of Orthodontics. He has also been awarded a Membership in the Faculty of Dental Trainers from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

Peter is Board certified with the Australasian Orthodontic Board and is accredited with the New Zealand Association of Orthodontists Practice Accreditation Programme. He is a strong supporter and actively participates in the New Zealand of Orthodontists Wish For A Smile Charity work. He works one day a week at the Christchurch Hospital with children have who cleft lip and palate and special needs. He also undertakes orthodontics for adults who have dentofacial deformities that require orthognathic (jaw) surgery, and keeps up to date about "Chalky Teeth" through membership of The D3 Group for Developmental Dental Defects. He travels annually to Cambodia for voluntary work with cleft and craniofacial clinics and underprivileged children, providing support and instruction.Peter has three sons. He enjoys tramping, skiing, hunting and fishing as well as participating in multi-sports.

Dr Marguerite Crooks

Specialist Orthodontist

Marguerite has a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and a Masters in Orthodontics from the University of Otago. It is these qualifications which enable Marguerite to be registered as a Specialist in Orthodontics. Marguerite has been practicing as a specialist orthodontist in Christchurch since 1996. Marguerite also has a Bachelor of Physical Education from the University of Otago.

Marguerite is an active member of the New Zealand Association of Orthodontists and is currently vice president, and has previously held the positions of secretary and councillor twice. Marguerite is accredited with the New Zealand Association of Orthodontists' Practice Accreditation Programme. Marguerite is also a member of the World Federation of Orthodontists, the New Zealand Dental Association including the Canterbury branch, the New Zealand Orthodontic Study Group and a Christchurch Dental Study Group. Marguerite has long been interested in "Chalky Teeth" having undertaken a benchmark study about tooth enamel abnormalities in Cook Islanders way back in 1990 (see academic publication here). These days she keeps at the forefront of chalky teeth treatment, research and education through membership of The D3 Group for Developmental Dental Defects.

Marguerite is married with two daughters, three dogs and enjoys gardening, yoga, walking and horsey things.

Dr John Perry

Specialist Orthodontist

Originally from Hampshire in South-East England, John qualified in dentistry at Glasgow University, Scotland. John practised as a dentist in Ashburton, where he met his partner, Morgan. John then travelled to the United Kingdom to train as an orthodontist. John holds Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Membership of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in Specialist Dental Practice and a Master of Orthodontics from Cardiff University School of Dentistry, Wales. He is also a registered orthodontist in New Zealand.

John is Consultant Orthodontist at Christchurch Hospital and provides care for patients with cleft lip and palate, craniofacial anomalies, complex medical conditions and those with severe jaw discrepancies. He has completed cleft and craniofacial orthodontic fellowships at Oslo University Hospital, Norway and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London. 

John is an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, taking time out each year to set the standards for the next generation of dentists. He actively participates in the New Zealand of Orthodontists Wish For A Smile Charity work and keeps up to date with chalky teeth treatment, research and education through membership of The D3 Group for Developmental Dental Defects. Outside work, John enjoys mountaineering and skiing and spending time with his partner, Morgan. John also enjoys playing guitar.

Aileen

Orthodontic Auxiliary

Aileen joined the team at Ilam Orthodontics in 2014 after registering as a dentist in the Philippines and subsequently as an orthodontic Auxiliary upon arriving in New Zealand.

Aileen feels there is no end to what can be learnt in the dental industry and is excited about the developing technologies and knowledge base in this field. She diligently attends and participates in scientific training and seminars so that she can keep up to date in her field.

Aileen hopes to extend her skills and capabilities in order to give the best service to her patients and enjoys being a part of her patients' journey to their perfect smile. Being a part of a hard-working team that shares this passion is a big part of what makes her job fulfilling.

When she isn’t at the practice, Aileen is a passionate baker and cook and enjoys socialising with her friends and family. She also explores the beautiful region by motorbike with her husband.

Haidee

Haidee

Orthodontic Auxiliary

Haidee is a New Zealand registered orthodontic Auxiliary and a registered dentist from the Philippines. She graduated with a doctorate in dental medicine in 1998 and has been a part of the dental industry for over 15 years.

Haidee is always open to learning what is new in dentistry and is considering further study in the dental and orthodontic fields. She also hopes to help others in her line of work.

Outside of the practice, Haidee is passionate about raising her children and spending time with her family. She also loves travelling around New Zealand.

Practice Manager

Therese is a qualified dental therapist and registered orthodontic auxiliary. Since the inception of Ilam Orthodontics, Therese has been a key leader of the team and manager of the practice. Therese enjoys being part of a dedicated team in a modern progressive practice. Outside work, Therese enjoys walking and cooking good food.

Catherine

Orthodontic Auxiliary

Catherine graduated as an orthodontic Auxiliary in 2015. She has also previously trained as a dental assistant and has a Diploma in Business.

A passionate lifelong learner, Catherine regularly attends training seminars and the occasional conference for professional development. She hopes to broaden her knowledge of orthodontics, as well as other aspects of the dental profession.

Catherine loves being involved in a process that impacts so positively on individuals. Being able to share that moment when a patient sees their teeth for the first time following the removal of braces is quite special.

Outside of the practice, Catherine spends time with her family and friends and enjoys decorating intricate and novelty cakes for special celebrations.

Orthodontic Auxiliary

Emma moved to New Zealand from the UK in 2009 where she had trained as a dental nurse.

Since moving to New Zealand she found a passion working within the orthodontic field and registered as a dental assistant in 2011. Emma is currently an orthodontic Auxiliary.

Outside of the practice, Emma enjoys spending time with family and going to local community events. She loves Japanese food and will often create Japanese delicacies at home with her partner. Emma also appreciates a good renovation project and particularly enjoys tiling.

Lisa

Orthodontic Auxiliary

Lisa graduated as a dental nurse from the Royal Liverpool Dental Hospital where she also worked as an oral health care provider for two years. This was followed by working in a busy dental practice for the next eight years before arriving in New Zealand in 2016.

Lisa has a particular interest in the placement and removal of fixed braces along with oral health and surgery. Seeing patients on a regular basis, getting to know them and seeing their dental transformation is one of the most rewarding parts of her role at Ilam Orthodontics. Lisa is currently an orthodontic Auxiliary.

In her spare time, Lisa looks after her fur-baby (kitten) Django and visits the city's newest cafes and restaurants with friends. She loves keeping in touch with her friends back in the UK and getting hooked on a good TV series.

Alma

Dental Assistant

Alma is an overseas qualified dentist, graduating from NITTE University, India in 2014. Since her university studies, she has maintained a high interest in orthodontics and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Health.

Alma moved to New Zealand after marriage and lives in Christchurch with her family. Alma’s multiple roles as mother, wife, student and clinical assistant keep her busy but in her free time Alma loves to spend time reading books and travelling with family.

Receptionist

Robyn enjoys welcoming and getting to know all of our patients who come into Ilam Orthodontics and likes to make their visits calm and positive.

She feels a sense of satisfaction by getting to know the patients and their parents and seeing their orthodontic journey at Ilam Orthodontics.

Outside of the practice, Robyn loves spending time with her family and friends, and taking her Jack Russell, ‘Archie’, on walks. You may also find her at the gym each morning or at a local art class as she also enjoys painting.
